Level 1

Learn to windsurf with this comprehensive 2-day beginning windsurfing course.  Lessons include:

  • Two 3-hour sessions with a U.S. Sailing Certified Hood River WaterPlay Instructor
  • Membership in Hood River WaterPlay's T.O.W. Club (FREE SAILING TIME !!! - see below)
  • Land based simulation
  • "Hands-on" on-the-water instruction
  • All beginner equipment: wetsuit, booties, life vest, helmet, and your own personal windsurfer, rigged just for you.
  • Instruction in wind theory, carrying your equipment, tacking & jibing, safety techniques, and more

The Beginner Beach

TIME:
Two day program, 3 hours each day
SCHEDULING:
10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily - any 2 days
Upon completion, you will get the official
US Sailing Certification.

What to Expect

What to expect in Level A:

You will learn and experience:

  • The names of the gear and sailing speak. Things like Port & Starboard
  • How to carry your gear
  • The 5 five positions to getting up and getting under way
  • Spend 20 – 30 min. on a simulator in a small group as the first portion of your lesson
  • Take your new simulator skills directly to the water and begin implementing by sailing with your coach
  • Learn how to sail upwind and hit your target
  • Make 180 degree (half circle) turns
  • Tack – efficiently (Turn with power upwind)
  • And much more!

What to expect in Level B:

  • Quick review of Level A
  • Spend 20-30 min. on the simulator developing your stance and downwind turns
  • How to drive the board upwind to weather with foot steering to maximize your reach
  • How to turn downwind without power in a downwind 180 degree turn
  • How to turn downwind with power thus performing a longboard jibe
  • Learn how to sail to ALL points of sailing direction
  • Begin power tacks and pivot jibes
  • Audit the session for understanding and preparation for FREE SAILING time

 

T.O.W. Club
(Time-on-the-Water)

Upon graduating from your Level 1 "Learn to Windsurf" Course, you can sail most any time during Hood River WaterPlay's regular sailing season at our beginner's beach for free!  All equipment is included...you and your sailing buddies provide the fun!

Daily 7 days per week!

Abbreviated Course Level I

For those of you who only have enough time for a single experience you CAN take just the first segment of the US Sailing Course which is 3 hours for $99.

While we find most of our guests have so much fun, that they want the full experience, a few simply want to try it out. You will miss out on some great instruction to really bring the sport full circle at the entry level, and you won’t get the 10 FREE hours of rental, but you will have a great 1st time experience.
